3rd session of the day

Another UP $.70

Didn't quite know how to play this one and its the hand I lost the biggest amount of money on. Any help would be very welcome. It was only when the river came that I realised that the villian may have a Queen with a higher kicker

  1. 'the villian may have a Queen with a higher kicker'

Indeed, so lets go back to basics. Why are you playing this hand? Q8 offsuit? Pure garbage hand. Even when you make top pair your kicker gets you in all sorts of trouble. It makes no straights and no flushes. Fold PF you crazy animal.

Postflop though, at least you took a street off. I'd be more inclined to check the turn though (POT CONTROL!) and hopefully elecit some bluffs on the river. What were you doing on the turn if raised? You should always know what you will do when raised. That's why we talk about 'bet calling', 'bet folding' etc rather than just a single action.

After you do bet the turn and he calls twice and the river comes another Q, then there's only one Q left in the deck. His range is that single Q with a better kicker than yours, and a ton of middle pocket pairs. Given this, we lose money VS his entire range by not value betting, especially as his middle PPs just got the nut card to call again (doesnt change the board from their point of view, they were losing to a Q anyway and this Q makes it less likely you hold one).
